In February 1933, the Notarbartolo family documented their winter ascent to the crater of Mount Etna. The film opens with a black-and-white title card indicating the date and altitude: “12–13 February 1933 — Ascent to the Crater of Etna (3,300 m)”. The footage shows a man climbing a steep snow-covered slope, his footprints tracing the path upward. The camera lingers on the volcanic landscape: rocky inclines, deep snowdrifts, and wide views over the lava terrain. In several scenes, the man pauses beside a small stone shelter, while close-up shots capture plumes of smoke or steam, suggesting the proximity of the active crater. In another sequence, a person descends into an opening in the structure, partially buried by snow, emphasizing the difficulty of the approach. Together, these images convey the immediacy of the climb and the harsh winter environment of the volcano, where the power of the landscape and the human presence interact continually on screen.
